“A prayer by Moses, the man of God. O Lord, you have been our refuge throughout every generation. Psalm 90:1 (GW)
When reading the Scriptures, we find various men called “man of God.” What qualified a person to receive that title? Let us look at the lives of some of them.
Moses – A man to whom the Lord spoke face to face as a man speaketh unto his friend. “And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.” Moses could truly bless the children of Israel because he had been in the presence of God.
David – A man after God’s own heart, a man loving and obeying the Lord. He is called the man of God in II Chronicles 8:14 (AMPC) The answer is found in Acts 13:22b (NLT): “…’I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him to do.’” Even with all his failures, David truly wanted God to be first in his life. He served God faithfully for many years. When sin came into his life, he once again did what God required – he truly repented – and God forgave him.
Elijah – A man who spoke the Word of the Lord and what he said was truth. “And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.” I Kings 17:24 (KJV)
Timothy – A man who was urged to run away from all kinds of evil and follow God’s ways. “But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.” (KJV)
Paul instructed Timothy how to become a man of God – to be perfect or complete. The only way to become a true man of God is through the Word of God. “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” II Timothy 3:16 (NLT) “So that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted thoroughly equipped fir every good work.” II Timothy 3:17 (AMPC)
Every born again Christian can be called a man or woman of God when we commune with God; obey Him; speak the Word of God in truth; run away from evil; study and obey the Scriptures.
What a privilege to actually be a man or woman of God.
